Its three floors display beauty products, shoes, breathtakingly expensive womenswear ? the likes of Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli ? plus edgy new labels such as Mist and Rock & Republic jeans. There?s a floor of choice menswear morsels, and the small jewel of a food department, leading to the restaurant, is a one-stop shop for the rich, and a sublime browsing experience for everyone else. There?s also an Aveda spa, a juice bar and an absolutely fabulous handbag department that features the season?s most gorgeous arm-candy from Luella, Balenciaga and Chloé. The restaurant and brasserie are located on the second floor.

Hotel Chocolat
Hotel Chocolat
Hotel Chocolat, Northern Extension, New Cannon Street, Arndale Centre M4 3AJ 0870 442 8282 < Metrolink Shudehill or Market Street/ City Centre buses/Victoria rail
Chocolate. In beautiful, minimalist black packaging, sprinkled with such enticements as swirls of cream, dried raspberries and orange peel. It?s a long way from the corner shop?s sweetie counter ? and so are the prices. But worth every calorie and penny for a very special treat.
Selfridges
Selfridges
Selfridges, 1 Exchange Square M3 1BD 0870 837 7377 < Metrolink Victoria/City Centre buses/ Victoria rail
It would be a crime not to guide the discerning visitor to Selfridges; five floors of loveliness, desirability and luxury. The basement food department is worth a trip in itself, with several counters serving speciality food, plus a Yo! Sushi conveyor belt. For divine wine and top-notch dinner parties, this is the ultimate treat. Upstairs, there are cosmetics, menswear ? with a mix of street and classic labels ? luxury womenswear and shoes, beside the Champagne bar/restaurant, while the top floor offers younger, funkier (read ?cheaper?) high street labels. Not to be missed.
Penhaligons
Penhaligons
Penhaligons, St Anns Square M2 7TT 0161 835 1155 < Metrolink Market Street or St Peters Square rail/City Centre buses/Victoria rail
Stepping inside a Victorian parfumerie must have been a similar experience to stepping inside Penhaligon?s. Wooden display cabinets house sparkling bottles of the company?s own scents, soaps and bath products, based around delightfully old-fashioned ingredients. The pink Love Potion Number 9 is a big seller, and rumour has it that the staff will wrap your gift purchases without the power of sticky tape, using only ribbons and skill.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma
Oklahoma, 74-76 High Street M4 1ES 0161 834 1136 < Metrolink Market Street/City Centre buses/Piccadilly rail
If a giant piñata were to explode in, the results might resemble Oklahoma. Defying categorisation, this airy, wooden-floored shop-cum-café stocks the best selection of retro and quirky cards in town alongside bizarre and amusing cheap gifts, imported and designer homeware and a healthy dose of kitsch. If you`re after Virgin Mary charm bracelets, or magic trees, you?re in the right place. If you?d rather buy a subtitled Korean DVD and eat vegetarian chilli washed down with a banana smoothie, you?re also catered for. Anyone who dares to leave this place disappointed is a joyless soul indeed.
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood, 47 Spring Gardens M2 2BG 0161 835 2121 < Metrolink St Peters Square/City Centre buses/ Victoria rail
Viv is from nearby Glossop, so it`s only right that she should have a dedicated boutique here. And it does her justice. Carved mahogany display cases reveal glittering Westwood orb jewellery, the latest collections are hung beside huge gilt mirrors and there`s a chaise longue on which to try the latest shoe ranges. The pricey but stunning main collection sells alongside the diffusion line T-shirts ? and every self respecting Manc fashionista owns a tartan Westwood bag.
