Hotel was clean and room spacious but the hotel and room is tired looking. On arrival I was told the restrarant was out of use due to private functions all weekend, thought it was poor as I was a paying guest and had limit access to the hotel. I wanted to book afternoon tea but was unable to, had I of known prior to booking I would of booked elsewhere.
Staying 2 nights we could not have asked for great views of Christmas Market and castle. Breakfast excellent quality. Only downside qas walking through the smokers at the front door and the noise from room next door.
A great location. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Not smart but very clean and comfortable and has all necessary facilities. Only downside, the dining room was closed for 2 nights for an evening function. But plenty of places round about for eating.
Very enjoyable stay. Nice room overlooking castle. Well furnished and comfortable bed. Breakfast very good. Staff friendly and helpful. Would recommend and return myself.
When I booked this Hotel I was told that it had a restraunt for evening meals but on arrival we were told that we could not use it as there was a private function on both nights and no alternative had been arranged. Although the hotel was well positioned and of a fairly good standard I would think twice about rebooking, I do not appreciate being treated as an irritant to their christmas functions
Most impressed
A great hotel for family esp. with young children. Staff very professional and helpful.
I thought it a bit ridiculous that they were looking for you to pay £19.95 for a basic TV reception in your room. I understand internet services should be an additional cost but basic TV reception should be included in the price of your room. Other than that, hotel was fine.
Central position, less than five minutes from Waverley Station. Room very spacious, and clean. Hotel would benefit from a facelift, although not dirty, just a bit worn and dated in parts. Great value for money, especially the fact it included a really good buffet breakfast. Will definitely be staying again, soon!
Facilities in general were very good. Room outlook dismal, but satisfactory for short stop-over.No fault of the hotel, but sleep was disturbed both nights by late night revellers and door banging.
excellant hotel was really impressed with the staff especially lady on the desk. food was really enjoyable and plenty of it.. would definitely stay there again.
With the hotels central position, which was good, means there is a lot of outside noise. This is not just traffic but people returning along princes street from nightclubs at 2.30.a.m. quite noisily. The hotel itself was excellent and the staff very courteous and helpful and the food was very good value.
On our recent weekend stay we thought that the hotel was in a prime location, staff very helpfull and friendly, food was of a high standard and would not hesitate to stay at the Mount Royal again and would recommend to friends.
Excellet location. friendly hotel.will stay again
Very clean - good staff only disappontment we had to leave at 7.15 and cooked breakfast was not ready. Only had cornflakes and toast before leaving. and only one shower get and shampoo in room
Breakfast was v good great start to the day. The waitress with the bounce in her step truly made a lovely breakfast experience always checking that everything was suitable. Very helpful and friendly staff. Would certainately come back
Lovely hotel and room. Welcoming.
hotel was idealy situated - the booking mess up (only one double room was available) Not ideal for a married couple have to make do with two single rooms
Hotel was comfortable , staff ok, when settled in to room, went down to bar for a drink, the moment we sat down a girl came round some tables and plonked a reserved sign on the table. How rude didnt explain why or ask us to move seats. Not my fault that they had organised a xmas party that night and needed tables to set up , we had just paid for rather expensive drinks and were left with no where to sit. This was a birthday treat for me from my husband, and i was very disappointed at the lack of manners from some of the staff.Although on a high old lady at breakfast was a delight, so lovely and helpfull. they dont make them like that anymore.Room very stuffy and hot, even though we did not have the heating on.
Overall the hotel and staff were excellent especially when one of our cases was mistakenly collected by someone else! However we were very disappointed about the restrictions on use of the bar and restaurant in the evenings. This meant we had to make special arrangements - very inconvenient as we were travelling with an 18 month old toddler and a 78 year old lady! We should have been informed before arrival as we booked the hotel intending to use these facilities.
REALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY AT THE MOUNT ROYAL HOTEL, WILL DEFINATELY STAY AT HOTEL NEXT TIME WE`RE IN EDINBURGH. REALLY EXCELLENT BREAKFAST.
This hotel is in a great central location to shops bars and restaurants. Hotel rooms are quite small but clean. Large dinning area with views of the castle. Breakfast buffet was nice and stays open until 12noon. Friendly hotel which I deffinatley return to.
A friendly welcome on arrival. Room a good size overlooking Princes St . A great view of the. castle from our window. The room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was very nice with a good choice to choose from. Would recommend this hotel.
Superb central location. Staff very helpful and polite. Nice views from room and lounge.
Although the location of this hotel is excellent, we were disappointed with the decor in the room and felt the hotel would benefit from some modernisation.
A perfect choice for our trip -on the weekend of the Edinburgh Marathon. Also the service, reception , bar and restaurent were without fault. Very fair pricing too.Thoroughly recommended!
Having booked two twin rooms for one night reception at check in only acknowledged a booking for one twin room. Sharing the booking reference information and print out resulted in acceptance of the error and in the absence of a second twin room, two singles were offered at no extra cost. On further discusion, it appears that there may have been a transposition of two twin rooms for one night to one twin room for two nights. overall this was a little disconcerting and could have been a significant problem if other rooms were not available.
Two non-smoking rooms booked. One was on a whole floor of smoking rooms & smelt strongly of smoke. Small and v cramped. Other was non-smoking, large and pleasant but bed was v uncomfortable. Visible bruises next morning from springs. Staff were obliging & room was switched but new room was small and cramped. Decor dated & generally grubby. Breakfast poor - cooked breakfast not ready for start of service; menus giving details of hot food to order placed on tables as we finished breakfast; undercooked tomatoes, rubbery scrambled eggs, cold toast only cooked on 1 side. We`ll be going elsewhere next year (annual trip for rugby) & wont be recommending on the rugby forums.
We stayed for two nights and found the hotel to be very comfortable and in an excellent location for getting around Edinburgh. The staff were extremely hepful and pleasant. Breakfast was very nice with plenty of choice to suit all. There was only one lift working which meant we sometimes had to wait for it to arrive.
bar closed to early.... dont think I would come back which is a shame as it was in a great location , but the room really was one off the worst ...small and gloomy with a shower that steamed up like a turkish bath...all the staff were very very good though.thankyou
we enjoyed every aspect of our stay. the food was very nice. everything was there for us to choose from for the breakfast. the staff were particulary pleasant and helpful.
I stayed at the Mount Royal Hotel in Edinburgh 4/5 April 2009 with two friends. I shared room 455 and another friend stayed in 457. On our return to the hotel around 1.00 a.m., after being at an evening reception, the guest in room 457 had to shout for help as she was trapped in the bathroom. The bathroom door was jammed solid and attempts to open the door resulted in the handle coming away in her hand. I have to say that response from Hotel staff was instant, but unfortunate considering the early hours and the fact she was on her own, was a bit upsetting. In addition, other guests were disturbed. I have stayed in the Hotel before and been very happy with the facilities. Christine
