Good-sized room with the bonus of windows that opened. All staff encountered were very pleasant with one slight reservation. Bags had been left with Concierge and when we went to retrieve them the desk was unmanned. Three ladies on Reception did not make any approach to us - we had to go to them. Overall. a well placed and perfectly pleasant hotel.
Initial impressions very good. Staff friendly and helpful throughout. Room small but comfortable with a good view over the Forth and Arthur`s Seat. On a chilly weekend the room was very nice and cosy. Food overall was very good. Our evening meal began with a black pudding frittata which was a bit greasy and didn`t feature much black pudding. Otherwise the rest of the meal was excellent, especially the belly of pork and collops of beef. I think that for £22.50 for 3 courses this was excellent value. Breakfast the following morning was good. However the scrambled egg in the buffet was totally inedible. It had a crust on top as it had been sitting for so long. I would have thought staff would have spotted it and replaced it. May I add we were relatively early for breakfast. In conclusion I would say that our stay was very good and the minor issues did not have any effect on our overall enjoyment of the stay.
Although we really enjoyed the eperience and overall the hotel was good we did feel there could be big improvement in the leisure centre. The steam room had been out of action for a number of days and the decor around the pool needs attention. The concierge really let the place down with his surly attitude (bordering rudeness) towards fellow colleagues. He is entitled to an opinion but he must keep his views to himself. The room was clean and neat and we would not hesitate to stay again or recommend the hotel to friends and/or family. I don`t want to overstate the issue because it was a nice stay for us both on this special occcasion
Whilst staying in the hotel the fire alarm went at 2.30am We evacuated the hotel without seeing anyone being in charge of the emergency, or any staff at all. What concerned me most was that there was no roll call so how could your fire warden know that everyone evacuated. Indeed the next morning we were told by an elderly visitor that his wife needs help and had placed the hotel card on his bedroom door and no one had come to there aid. I will be interested in your comments. Shirley Aberdeen
Cosidering there had been a refurb the room was not finished well the waiting staff were good & the food was very good the bar was a little expensivethe reception staff were a little hard to understand & I am english not scottish
Parking wish it could be closer and free
Rooms are fine, dissapointed that we had to ask for tea and sugar as they had not replenished from the previous guests.Concierge could not understand english very well and had to translate via the computer to find out where the Theatre was that we had booked !!!! not very good. The hotel itself in in a very central position and was comfortable.
Hotel was lovely, staff were friendly, dining room ceiling could do we maintenanceOur room was fabulous, with a lovely view .Thank you
Difficult to rate Carlton based upon our experience. Their "reservations" office took our written reservation for 14th Aug and reserved a room for 14th Sept! The hotel was full when we arrived. However, we did receive very effecient and considerate assistance from one of the front desk team and she phoned around and found us a room nearby. It was, apparently, the only room in the city of "four star" standard, at the Apex, but, unfortunately, it was in the basement and really a very bad experience. So, Carlton front desk were effecient and kind but the reservations admin is not efficient. I recommend prospective guests re-confirm their reservation a few days before arrival. I shall be writin g to the hotel management for compensation-unless this note prompts them to contact me.Tim Dean, Kent.
Good position for shopping and sightseeing - close to Princes Street and the train station. Hotel comfortable. Lots of choice at breakfast.
The room was spacious and comfortable although the TV was rather old fashioned and the hairdryer had an intermittent on-off fault. The health and spa leisure facilities were a bit dowdy however and needed a facelift. Breakfast was generally good and unhurried but the hot buffet kept running short of bacon and eggs which rapidly led to queues forming.
Although the room was comfortable it was very hot even with the window open and the inadequate fan system switched on. The noise level from the street was just bearable during the day but at night even with the window closed the noise stayed the sames leading to sleepless nights, some soundproofing is definately needed . Also during our three nights there the bar was closed early due to maintenance on the first two we didn `t bother trying on our last night. Breakfasts were very good.
A few small let downs. Telly not working properly. Carpet needing stuck down. Room service breakfast could be better.
We arrived early but were allowd in our room. We booked a twin but got a double but did not complain as it was just for one night.Great location for all the attractions especially the Royal Mile.Breakfast was good but disappointed no porridge or scottish square sausage. A missed opportunity to give the best of local food.Eggs were not cooked and had to go back but were fine on return.Overaul impression good but could do better. Staff told us now under spanish ownership which is why no special scottish fod.
good location - friendley staff - good food - room excellent - what more can you say
Overall, after an initially favourable first impression - except for a long queue to check in and only one receptionist whoc also had to answer the phone, the service got increasingly worse. Avoid room service and make sure that the business centre has paper in its printer. The costs in the business service centre are exhorbitant and many excellent hotels offer free internet to their customers. I wont be back.
would of been nice to see a few more Scottish people working in the hotel but apart from that we would recommend this hotel and use this again in the future
Positives: Public areas very attractive and smart and staff invariably helpful and friendly. Excellent location.Negatives: Bedroom rather worn and tired, windows very dirty. Not as good as the Premier Inns we have stayed in recently, and breakfast certainly no better.
Conference facilities not ideal as very cramped and too hot, which was a pity as the rest of the hotel was really very pleasant and comfortable. Conference dinner average only.
I booked this stay for my mam and dad (Mr & Mrs Clark) for their Golden Wedding. They thoroughly enjoyed their stay, especially the breakfast! They also commented on the size and comfort of the bed. Thank you
For me not up to standards
The hotel was of a very high standard, the staff very friendly, especially Mike, food was good, the rooms were very hot, asked for this to be looked at, a fan was put in my room straight away although didn`t make much difference as only 1 of the windows opened a fraction
Every member of staff were just great enjoyed my stay very much. Will return to the hotel whenever possible. Many RegardsSuzanne Smith.
Excellent reception service , excellent room . Disappointing Breakfast service... we were greeted at the breakfast reception by a memberof staff who took our room number and then checked her watch implying we were late despite it being 9.30 on a Monday Morning.Another member of staff spilt milk on my partners linen trousers (dry clean only), which is not ideal when you have to travel 300 miles in a car without a change of new clothes.Accidents do happen but it did spoil the visit a little.Gavin McAndrew
We were not impressed with service at breakfast time - definitely not 4 star customer service. We were not offered tea/coffee when shown to a table and had to request this from waitress. Not very much hot food available when we went to breakfast and wasn`t repleaced very quickly. Didn`t feel much of a choice either. Tables were not cleared regularly . However overall we enjoyed our stay but certainly doesn`t qualify for 4 stars in our book.
only bad thing rooms way to warm and air con was not working properly in our room . the telephone line in our room was cut but the staff quickly solved that issue
Staff helpfull. Facilities excellent. Food first class. Room comfortable. However the one draw back with my stay was as a result of being given a room overlooking the main road. The door to the balcony was ill fitting and did not close properly. The thinness of the double glazing resulted in a very high noise level coming up from the main road. This continued until the early hours of the moring, approximately 2.0 am. The first bus then passed below our window at approximately 6.0am. If I was to use this hotel again, I would request a room to the rear.
Front desk staff is outstanding. Very helpful in all ways. In room, bathroom facilities/tub etc. excellent. However: tv not working properly; also impossible to completely turn off air conditioning/heating fan noise--very irritating. Also should NOT have to pay for internet service.
